John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion
After appreciating some diverse art, it’s time to appreciate some architecture. The John Harris and Simon Cameron Mansion was built in 1766 by the city’s founder John Harris. In 1863 U.S. Senator Simon Cameron bought the home.
It was originally built as a Georgian-style home, but Cameron renovated it into a Victorian mansion. The outside of the mansion is spectacular. Out the front door, visitors have a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River.
The Historical Society of Dauphin County has preserved the home as it was when Cameron and his descendants lived there. Cameron’s own furnishings are in the office. The Victorian parlor contains French mirrors, while the solarium has French wallpapers.
